Collagen is not readily found in most foods. There are some foods and nutrients that may assist in supplementing /supporting collagen production. Here are a few examples:
- Vitamin C is essential in supporting collagen synthesis. Sources include citrus, bell peppers, broccoli, strawberries, and kiwifruit.
- Vitamin A containing foods help support skin health. Sources include oranges, sweet potatoes, apricots, carrots, mango, and cantaloupe.
- Choline helps to maintain cell structure and integrity. Sources include beef liver, eggs, beef, soybeans, cod, chicken, mushrooms, and wheat germ.
- Vitamin E (an antioxidant) helps support cell health. Sources include avocado, nuts, seeds, and oils.
IS THERE REALLY A PLANT-BASED COLLAGEN?
There’s lots of information about collagen and the different types. Let’s take a look at some of the basics.
Collagen is a structural protein that maintains strength and flexibility throughout the body. It is found primarily in the skin, bone and other connective tissues of animals. Sources of collagen used to make dietary supplements include beef, pork, sheep, chicken and fish. At present, there is no plant-based collagen, as it is a protein found exclusively in animals. Our bodies produce collagen, which is an essential component of connective tissue. There are nutrients in some foods; however, that play a role and are required for the production of collagen such as vitamin C.
Even though collagen is one of the most abundant proteins in the body, it is not readily found in foods. This is where collagen supplementation comes into play. Clinical studies have shown taking collagen can promote healthy collagen formation. Collagen can provide us with some of the amino acids our body needs to support the healthy synthesis of the proteins in our hair and nails.
NeoCell® uses an advanced manufacturing process called hydrolysis that converts large collagen molecules into small peptides that may become bioavailable in the body. Hydrolyzed collagen also plays a role in supporting healthy skin, hair, nails and joints.
